Description

We can confidently say that this evil eye pendant featuring mother of pearl, lapis lazuli and diamonds is quite unlike any other.

Jewellery has been worn for millennia as a protective talisman or amulet, or a charm to attract good luck. They unsurprisingly take on extra significance during difficult times. The Egyptians revered scarab beetles. Many people have a lucky number.

But one of the most striking motifs is the evil eye. Common to many cultures, it is believed to cast or reflect malevolent gazes and has been interpreted in many ways. A good example is the hamsa, an open right hand which incorporates the eye in its centre.

An opaque stone prized for its intense ultra marine colour, lapis lazuli is one of the earliest known traded gems, and was known to have been traded as early as the second half of the 4th millennium BC… It features in some of the world’s most treasured relics, such as the magnificent mask of King Tutankhamun. Good quality lapis often contains tiny specks of brassy pyrite (fools gold). These little specks make lapis lazuli especially suitable for setting in yellow gold. Provided that they are not too prominent, these specks add texture and are valued as a sign that the stone is genuine.

The colour is so unusual, that lapis was ground to create pigment for paints, and during the Renaissance, this colour was often reserved for religious works due to its extreme cost. The mineral’s name is derived from the Persian word lazhward, meaning blue. Lapis has often been worn in the belief that it will protect the wearer from evil, hence its ubiquitous presence in the “evil eye”.

The best quality material has traditionally come from Afghanistan, which is the source for this piece.

Jewellery needs to evolve to remain appealing and relevant, so this evil eye pendant with diamond lashes is a fun and witty take on the concept. It is literally winking at you.

The iridescent eye of the pendant is mother of pearl featuring a glorious lapis lazuli iris. (Please note that the image featured illustrates a black onyx pupil). This is surrounded by round brilliant cut diamonds and crowned with nine baguette diamond lashes. All set in 14ct yellow gold. The chain is discreetly soldered to the outer lashes, ensuring that the pendant is always visible, and that the clasp never rotates to the front.

Other similar pendants in our collection include the diamond pavé sun pendant necklace in two tone gold and the composite turquoise, diamond and white gold sun pendant necklace.

The rolo chain necklace has four adjustable lengths- 37.5cm at its shortest to 45cm at its longest. (The jump rings are set at 15″, 16″, 17″ and 18″). This simple feature provides welcome versatility to those who favour layering necklaces. The trick to effective layering is creating contrasts between size, shape and colour.
