An opaque stone prized for its intense ultra marine colour, lapis lazuli is one of the earliest known traded gems, and was known to have been traded as early as the second half of the 4th millennium BC… It features in some of the world’s most treasured relics, such as the magnificent mask of King Tutankhamun. Good quality lapis often contains tiny specks of brassy pyrite (fools gold). Provided that they are not too prominent, these specks add texture and are valued as a sign that the stone is genuine.
The colour is so unusual, that lapis was ground to create pigment for paints, and during the Renaissance, this colour was often reserved for religious works due to its extreme cost. The mineral’s name is derived from the Persian word lazhward, meaning blue. Lapis has often been worn in the belief that it will protect the wearer from evil, hence its ubiquitous presence in the “evil eye”.
The best quality material has traditionally come from Afghanistan, which is the source for this piece.
One of our most coveted pieces, this necklace features 1.33ct lapis lazuli and 0.23ct diamonds and is set in 14ct white gold. The organic floral motif is timeless but contemporary, and the tiny second pavé set diamond blossom is what sets it apart- the deliberate asymmetry makes it playful and fun, but retains balance in the design.
The blossom is soldered to the chain, which conveniently keeps the pendant in place (it does not run freely along the chain), and this avoids the clasp sliding to the front. The chain is secured with a lobster clasp.
Infinitely versatile, it conveniently has four adjustable lengths, varying from 37.5cm at its shortest to 45cm at its longest. So layers with ease. Personalise your look by pairing with a diamond initial pendant, and have some fun mixing the colours of gold.
Available in yellow, white and rose gold.
If you love lapis but favour a more geometric design, the necklace is also available featuring a star motif.
Available in yellow, white and rose gold.Customise it with other gem materials including pink opal and turquoise.
Personalise the pendant with a hand engraved message on the backing plate. Please enquire for more information.
