A lapidary is an artisan who transforms rough gem material into fabulous gemstones or decorative items. They need to understand the crystallography of the rough, which directions create the best colour and be aware of any inherent structural weaknesses which may cause the stone to break during fashioning.

Fundamentally, they are endeavouring to achieve the best yield from the rough material which may mean a trade off between the quality of cut and the ultimate weight of the stone. It is a fine art to balance all these (sometimes conflicting) attributes.

For some of our bespoke jewellery commissions, we have had stones specificially cut to order in order to fulfil a specific request.
